A Learning Mindset Is a Key to Moving from Intern to Full-Time
A Story of Rivano Ardiyan Taufiq Kurniawan, Bangkit 2022 Graduate from Informatics, UPN Veteran Yogyakarta
The key to success in a career differs for everyone. Some stay true to their dreams with unwavering consistency, while others cultivate a relentless drive for more. Rivano Ardiyan Taufiq Kurniawan (24), however, embraces both values.
Rivano's desire to build a career in the tech industry began with his deep curiosity about computers. This curiosity led him to pursue a degree in Informatics at UPN Veteran Yogyakarta, where he later discovered Bangkit, a program initiated by Google and supported by GoTo and Traveloka.
Through Bangkit, Rivano grew and eventually built a career in his desired field. How did he achieve his dream? Let's dive into his full story!
Rivano’s Journey Started with His Relentless Pursuit of Knowledge
Rivano was born in Sragen as the second of two siblings, with his parents working as teachers. Growing up in a family that prioritized education, he was taught never to be easily satisfied with learning. He had to cultivate an insatiable thirst for knowledge to keep growing.
This mindset took root early on. When Rivano was in first grade, he was among the first in his community to experience the benefits of using a computer. His curiosity about the device grew rapidly—playing games and drawing on it was insufficient. He wanted to understand how computers worked.
While at SMA Negeri 1 Sragen, Rivano realized his passion for technology. As a result, he focused on subjects related to mathematics and statistics. Upon graduating, he pursued a degree in Informatics at UPN Veteran Yogyakarta.
“In college, I developed an interest in mobile development, particularly Android, because I saw how widely used the operating system was. I wanted to master mobile development to create something beneficial for many people,” Rivano shared.
Dove Deep Into Android in Bangkit
Rivano began his comprehensive Android learning journey in his second semester when he joined the study group. Initially, he completed several beginner-level courses at Dicoding, steadily building his foundation. His insatiable thirst for knowledge drove him to deepen his expertise in Android development, which ultimately led to his appointment as the Head of the Android Development division in the study group.
As Rivano approached the phase in his studies where he needed to undertake an internship, the Kampus Merdeka program—initiated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology—became available. Initially planning to do a traditional internship, he became interested in Kampus Merdeka instead, as it offered many academic credit conversions (SKS).
What made Kampus Merdeka even more appealing to Rivano was the Bangkit program, which was part of the initiative. By joining Bangkit, he could focus on learning Android development through Dicoding without attending in-person campus lectures while converting his studies into academic credits.
Ultimately, Rivano decided to join Bangkit 2022, choosing the Mobile Development (Android) learning path. Knowing that Dicoding, the learning platform used by Bangkit, had high standards for its graduates, he was determined to study diligently to complete the advanced-level courses.
“I could study in this program for free, so it would be a waste if I didn’t give it my all. I was committed to going all out,” Rivano shared.
Growing in Bangkit Until His Capstone Project Team Secured Incubation Funding
Rivano’s journey as a Bangkit 2022 participant was not without challenges. He had to undergo intensive Android training. However, he found great support in the Instructor-Led Training (ILT) sessions led by industry experts and the weekly sharing sessions with Bangkit alums. Rivano admitted that these sessions kept him motivated in his learning journey.
After five months of comprehensive training in Android technology—complemented by soft skills and English lessons—Rivano needed to apply his knowledge through a final project known as the capstone project. For this project, he had to form a team of students from different universities and learning tracks, including Machine Learning and Cloud Computing.
Together with his team, Rivano developed EcoSense, a platform designed to enable the public to contribute to environmental issues through educational campaigns and social forums. However, working on EcoSense came with challenges, as the team members were geographically separated and had limited time to collaborate.
"I have high trust and confidence in the EcoSense team, which comprises some of the best talent I’ve ever met. With talent and the right mentorship, we eventually made it into the Top 20 Capstone Projects in Bangkit 2022," Rivano recalled. "We earned incubation funding from Google and Dikti, and after the incubation phase at Bangkit, we also had the opportunity to receive additional funding from Startup Campus."
Building a Career as a Mobile Engineer at a Leading Startup
Building EcoSense was a valuable experience for Rivano after graduating from Bangkit and UPN Veteran Yogyakarta. He began his career by applying for an Android Engineer Intern position at Privy, Indonesia's leading digital identity and signature provider.
"I was supposed to take a technical test during the interview process. However, as the interview progressed, the recruiter reviewed my resume and asked many questions about my EcoSense project. I never expected that my experience would lead to an immediate job offer without having to take the technical test," Rivano shared.
Now, Rivano has successfully transitioned into a full-time Mobile Engineer at Privy. He is responsible for building, developing, and maintaining the company’s application to ensure it remains sustainable and aligned with user needs. Among all the courses he took in Bangkit, Rivano found that the Fundamental Android Application Development course benefited his work.
As a Bangkit alumnus who has successfully built a career in Android development, Rivano hopes to inspire future digital talents to follow in his footsteps. He wants everyone to believe in their dreams while maintaining a relentless drive for knowledge.
"Even now, whenever I'm building an app and forget something, I always go back to the materials I studied on Dicoding," he said.
"You can dream, and no one can limit your aspirations. Once you have a dream, believe in it, nurture it with passion, fuel it with action, and watch it come to life." Rivano concluded.
