Calorify’s Aspiration in Supporting Indonesian’s Healthy Lifestyle

A Story of Calorify, One of the Top 20 Product-Based Capstone Projects in Bangkit 2023 Batch 1

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle often takes a backseat in a world dominated by the hustle and bustle of modern life. Amidst this chaos, a beacon of change has emerged – Calorify, an application designed to revolutionize how we approach health and well-being.

Imagine an app that assesses your personal needs and employs cutting-edge AI to classify the calories in your food simply by analyzing a photo—no wonder the innovation created by six Indonesian students deserved 140 million incubation funds from Google and Dikti.

How was Calorify's journey in developing the application? Let’s read the story!

An Application Empowering Healthier Lives in Indonesia

Calorify is not just an app; it's a mission made by six visionary students from top Indonesian universities: Melati Eka Putri from Universitas Indonesia, Farhah Farida Millah from Universitas Brawijaya, Fanny Limin and Lingga Rohadyan from Universitas Gunadarma, and Muhammad Hilmy Tsany and Sadira Taruna Calvindoro from Universitas Diponegoro.

Their journey is inspiring and proof of technology's impact on our lives. The story began from a mere idea to being awarded a significant incubation fund from Google and Dikti.

This app distinguishes itself with unique features. It can provide users with tailored calorie recommendations based on weight, height, activity level, stress, and health goals. These recommendations are not arbitrary; they are derived from formulas validated by nutrition experts, ensuring accuracy and reliability.

The second standout feature is the application's sophisticated classification system. Leveraging AI technology, Calorify can accurately detect the calorie content of a meal simply by analyzing a photo. This groundbreaking approach to calorie tracking takes the guesswork out of diet management, making it an indispensable tool for those striving to lead healthier lives.

However, Calorify goes beyond mere data crunching. The app motivates and guides users toward making informed dietary decisions. The team behind Calorify understands that sustaining a healthy lifestyle requires more than just numbers; it demands ongoing support and encouragement. The app provides personalized advice and motivation, empowering users to make better choices for their overall well-being.

Creating an Innovation That Made Them Get the Incubation Funds

United by a common mission, the students behind Calorify aim to bring about positive change in the health of the Indonesian population. Their motivation stems from alarming data indicating that non-communicable diseases, such as obesity, strokes, and major illnesses, contribute to a staggering 73% of deaths in Indonesia.

Fueled by this revelation, the Calorify team embarked on a mission to create an application that could potentially reduce mortality rates related to non-communicable diseases by 10% within the next five years. They believe in the adage, "You are what you eat," recognizing food choices' profound impact on one's identity. Hence, they aim to develop an application offering calorie recommendations and promoting a healthy lifestyle tailored to each user's profile and activities.

The journey of Calorify took an unexpected turn when the innovation got them into the Top 20 Product-Based Capstone Project list. Getting into the top teams earned the team recognition and an incubation fund of 140 million rupiahs from Google and Dikti.

The support didn't stop at financial aid; the Calorify team gained invaluable insights from advisors who are experts in both business and technology. This collaborative effort ensured that the application addressed user needs and adhered to industry standards, paving the way for a sustainable and impactful product.

Getting Real-World Learning Experience from Incubation Program

With the infusion of funds and expertise, Calorify is undergoing further development. The team should develop the app in a six-month incubation period. However, this challenge has only fueled their determination to create an application that benefits users and leaves a lasting impact on society.

The challenges encountered during this journey have made the Calorify team intimately familiar with the conflicts that may arise in the professional world. They have learned the art of conflict management, collaboration with individuals from diverse backgrounds, and achieving consensus—skills beyond application development.

Calorify attributes a significant part of its success to the learnings obtained from Bangkit, a comprehensive program covering Machine Learning, Cloud Computing, and Mobile Development (Android). This foundational knowledge has been instrumental in shaping Calorify into a high-quality application.

Now, in collaboration with the Ikatan Sarjana Ahli Gizi, Calorify ensures that its calorie calculation methods align with nutritional standards. This involvement of nutrition experts adds credibility to Calorify, positioning it as a trusted health application.

Valuable Advice from Calorify

The team has valuable advice for the Bangkit cohort aspiring to follow Calorify’s footsteps in successfully developing their capstone project.
“Form a team with individuals sharing a common vision and mission and appoint a project manager for decision-making. Leverage all the support provided by programs like Bangkit, from incubation funds to industry advisors,” Melati Eka Putri, the Project Manager of Calorify, said.
Calorify also added that a successful team stays focused on the goals, maintains a commitment to achieving them, and views challenges as opportunities for growth. For them, fatigue and burnout are normal as long as we take breaks after that but never give up. They believe that the process will always maintain the results.
